Prince William County Public Schools is now hiring for its 10-week Summer Law Clerk
Program for 2025. We are seeking a rising second- or third-year law student, preferably interested in education law who is interested in a 10-week summer clerkship to gain valuable practical and legal experience at Prince William County Public Schools – World-Class Schools and World-Class Educators. The clerkship will be based within PWC’s in the Office of Division Counsel, located at the Kelley Leadership Center outside Manassas, Virginia. PWCS is the second largest public school division in Virginia (34th largest in the United States), with over 100 schools and educational centers and approximately 16,000 employees serving more than 91,000 students.
This position will work closely with the Office’s five attorneys on sensitive and confidential legal matters involving significant legal issues, including employment law, student and staff civil rights, constitutional rights and claims, School Board governance, FOIA, student privacy, special education, copyrights, procurement issues, construction law, information technology and many other issues arising in public education. The position is full-time (37.5 hours per week) and pays $1,000.00 per week (on an hourly basis). We are looking for an applicant with excellent academic credentials, strong writing skills, and a particular interest and/or background in public education.
DIMENSIONS:
An essential function of this position is the ability to work in person and physically report for work at the location.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:
- Performs legal research utilizing both written and electronic sources and gathers and compiles facts and relevant case information to assist attorneys in drafting memos on various legal issues.
- Reviews and provides case summaries to attorneys on newly issued caselaw relevant to the school division.
- Assists in developing and revising policies, regulations, and procedures governing theoperation of the public schools.
- Assists attorneys in developing training for professional development presented to schooldivision administrators, executive leadership, and outside organizations.
- Attends meetings and seeks solutions to day-to-day legal issues confronting administrators.
