DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Sony Corporation of America (SCA) has a unique opportunity for a summer Employee Benefits Legal Intern. This role will be part of our Human Resources Team, reporting into the Benefits Counsel and will also work closely with our Employee Benefits Attorney and Senior Benefits Paralegal (“Benefits Legal Team”). This role will be based out of our New York City office.
The Benefits Counsel serves as a valued business partner to our internal clients, providing not only legal advice and guidance but also assisting clients in applying that advice to make informed business decisions. The successful intern will assist the Benefits Legal Team in delivering comprehensive, proactive, commercial, and practical legal services to internal clients, primarily the employee benefits and human resources staff of SCA and our US affiliates. This role requires adaptability in a fast-paced, hands-on, small team environment, where being both a self-starter and a team player is essential.
This position will be on a Hybrid schedule with 2 days per week in the New York City office.
POSITION SUMMARY
Sony Corporation of America (SCA) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Employee Benefits Legal Intern to join our in-house legal team. This internship will provide valuable experience in employee benefits law, including health and welfare plans, retirement plans, and compliance with ERISA and other relevant regulations. This position will also provide valuable experience such as:
- Hands-on experience in employee benefits law.
- Mentorship from experienced attorneys.
- Opportunity to work on meaningful projects that impact employees.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in the review and drafting of employee benefit plan documents.
- Conduct legal research on employee benefits laws and regulations.
- Support the Benefits Legal Team in compliance audits and assessments.
- Participate in meetings with internal stakeholders to discuss benefits-related issues.
- Help prepare materials for training sessions and presentations on employee benefits topics.
- Assist in responding to employee inquiries regarding benefits.
- Review and analyze changes in federal and state laws affecting employee benefits and communicate implications to the team.
- Support the preparation of filings with regulatory agencies, such as the Department of Labor and IRS.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION
Your qualifications and experience should include:
- Currently enrolled in a Juris Doctor (JD) program at an accredited law school.
- Strong interest in employee benefits law and in-house legal practice.
- Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Requirements:

The target hourly rate for this internship is $23.00 per hour. The individual will be paid hourly and eligible for overtime.
