The New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is a public benefit corporation and the nation’s largest municipal Housing Finance Agency. HDC seeks to increase the supply of multi-family housing, stimulate economic growth, and revitalize neighborhoods by financing the creation and preservation of affordable housing for low-, moderate-, and middle-income New Yorkers. HDC’s programs support the construction and preservation of multi-family affordable housing in New York City.
Position Summary:
HDC is the nation’s largest municipal housing bond issuer for affordable housing projects and offers an opportunity to gain hands on experience with, and insight into, the affordable housing industry, public finance and City government.
The Legal Intern will work on real estate closings for affordable housing projects including new construction, preservation loan and conversion loan closings and other aspects of the legal department’s work as needed.
Responsibilities:
Under the direction of a mentor attorney:
- Assist in all aspects of documenting, negotiating, and closing new construction and preservation financings and conversions of construction loans to permanent financing.
- Review contracts, leases, title, and other documents related to real estate financings and HDC programs.
- Research and prepare memoranda on affordable housing law and in connection with HDC transactions, programs, and policy issues.
- Perform general legal work related to the Corporation’s work as required.
Required Qualifications:
- Currently matriculated student at an accredited United States law school.
- Completed a course on Real Property Law prior to beginning the internship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior real estate, affordable housing, public finance, and/or New York City government experience and/or coursework strongly preferred.
- Demonstrable interest in affordable housing, public service and/or transactional real estate.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
